From the content of the book:
… “We read (the Mektubat) just for the sake of it, out of tradition and custom,” and so on.
It is not like that. This letter should cause a revolution in my mind. It should compel me to make new decisions, my brother.
… Why is a lesson read? To give a message to a person. To trigger emotions in a person that are not active, that are not in motion, right? Indeed. Why is a lesson read? So that a tear or two may fall from here (the eyes), right? Indeed. I could have read this passage in five minutes and moved on. “Ah, Bayram Hodja read us the Mektubat.” No. It is not like that. It is not important to put food into your mouth. What will you do with the food you put in your mouth? You will chew it. Look, there is digestion in the mouth. There is digestion in the esophagus. There is digestion in the stomach. There is digestion in the small intestine. After that, what does that food become? It mixes into the blood. It becomes life for you, it becomes blood for you, right? Ah, knowledge is exactly the same.
Efendi once, while speaking at Sultan Selim, emptied everything he had in his magazine. He said: “If my voice were strong enough, I would shout up to the Arsh: Read, read! Read, read!” May it be lawful for those who read. May the Almighty grant guidance to those who cannot read. This cannot be done without knowledge. This is the first leg of the matter. The second leg is this: You are reading, but how are you reading? In fact, today, the answer to the question “how are you reading?” needs to be researched very well. I mean, one way or another, things are being read. But how are they being read?
Mevlana Jalaladdin Rumi (may his secret be sanctified) says: “Before you read books, read yourself.” May your mouth taste honey, my Sultan. What does he mean? He means look to obtain the spiritual side of the matter through the path (Tariqat), through Sufism, through a perfect guide, and then bring the outward knowledge into play. But to get there, one must pass through here.
