This work is the only piece that Şehbenderzâde Filibeli Ahmed Hilmi wrote and managed to publish specifically regarding Sufism and the dervish orders. It is a fragment of a work he wrote titled "Tarikatlar ve Ricâli" (Dervish Orders and Their Figures), the conclusion of which remains unknown. Written approximately one hundred and ten years ago, this work also reflects the perspective of Ottoman intellectuals on Sufism and the dervish orders.
The content of the book consists of two parts. The first part is about the Ghawth al-A'zam Abd al-Qadir al-Jilani and the Qadiriyya order. This section covers the Ghawth al-A'zam’s life, his miracles, his order, his deputies, his lineage, and his physical characteristics, respectively. The second part concerns Abd al-Salam al-Asmar and the Arusiyya-i Selamiyya order. This section also covers al-Asmar’s life, his order, his miracles, and his legendary tales, respectively.
We have prepared the work as both the original text and a simplified version. Furthermore, we have included a Glossary of Sufi Terms to explain the many Sufi terms found in the book, as well as a Dictionary for words no longer in use today. We chose this method believing that it would make the text more accessible, particularly for younger readers.
