The work is a small book containing the objections of Abdülmecid Efendi, who was initially encouraged by the Ankara Government following the formal abolition of the Caliphate on March 3, 1924—which had by then lost its power and retained only symbolic value—and was subsequently brought to the office of the Caliphate as a mere figurehead, though he was in no way worthy of that position. When Abdülmecid Efendi was exiled along with other members of the Ottoman dynasty, he raised his own objections, expressing his belief that the abolition of the Caliphate was a great catastrophe. This book contains five documents: the manifesto he issued to the Islamic world on November 20, 1922, immediately after his election as caliph by the Ankara Assembly; the telegram he sent to the Speaker of the Assembly on March 1, 1924, upon rumors that the Caliphate would be abolished; another manifesto he issued in Territet on March 11, 1924, after his exile; a letter he wrote from Territet to the Speaker of the Assembly in Ankara; and the "Protest" (İtirazname), which he held back from sending until after the signing of the Treaty of Lausanne. We present both the original Ottoman Turkish text and its transliteration in this single volume.
