According to Necip Fazıl, who views and presents the Janissaries as the world's first organized and professional army, the Janissary was the ideal soldier during the first two centuries following their establishment, remaining loyal to the purpose and morality of their state. During the following three centuries, which would last until the Tanzimat, they became a rebel and an assassin of the state itself.
This decline of the Janissary is linked to a spiritual and social influence, to the flight of the ecstasy and love of faith from their hearts, and the Janissary is merely a vehicle in manifesting this terrifying and tragic revelation.
This work, as stated by the author himself, was written not so much as a chronicle of historical scandals and tragedies, but rather with the purpose of showing where the Janissaries began and where they ended, and of framing the spiritual and social influences behind this process.
