This work by Mehmed Tevfik Bey, better known as Çaylak Tevfik due to the humor newspaper he published, is a travelogue recounting the official return visit made to Hungary by a delegation selected by the Chamber of Deputies. This visit was intended both to congratulate the victory at Aleksinac in the Ottoman-Serbian War, which took place at the beginning of the reign of Sultan Abdülhamid II, and to reciprocate the visit of the Hungarian delegation that came to Dersaadet to strengthen the Ottoman-Hungarian friendship following the 1848 Hungarian Revolution.
As the only journalist in the delegation, Tevfik Bey narrates the visit almost day by day, and he originally began serializing his travelogue anonymously in Basîret, but unfortunately, the serialization remained unfinished. He subsequently published it about four months after the visit, having made it even more detailed.
The return visit went well for both sides, and our delegation left Hungary very satisfied. As an indication of their satisfaction during the visit itself, the members of the delegation were so surprised and delighted at every stop, in every town and every city, by the Hungarians’ goodwill, reception, hospitality, and the heartfelt love and affection they displayed that they were sometimes unable to speak from astonishment and sometimes shed tears of joy.
