"Ghazali’s Mishkat al-Anwar is one of the most remarkable and final products of his intellectual journey, which unfolded primarily within the framework of theology, philosophy, and Sufism. Writing this work in response to a friend's question regarding the symbolic expression in the verse 'God is the light of the heavens and the earth' (an-Nur 24/35), Ghazali does not merely put forward a theory of interpretation (ta'wil); he presents us with a theory of ontology grounded in epistemological and psychological data. This theory, which bears deep traces of Avicennian philosophy—the very philosophy he developed in the context of the concept of 'light' and criticized severely in many of his works, most notably Tahafut al-Falasifa—became a source of inspiration for thinkers with mystical and Sufi orientations such as Suhrawardi and Ibn al-Arabi."
