Söyleşiler (Interviews) was a book that Âkif Emre wanted to publish after Çizgisiz Defter. When we prioritized his work that we published under the title Müstağrip Aydınlar Yüzyılı (The Century of Westernized Intellectuals), the publication of Söyleşiler was delayed until today. Söyleşiler brings together, in chronological order, 16 interviews conducted by Âkif Emre that were serialized in magazines and newspapers between 1992 and 1997. These interviews are significant in that they present the ideas that were discussed, the questions that were sought to be answered, and the sentiments and thoughts that were on the agenda until approximately the year 2000. Some are thinkers; some are academics who have drawn attention with their studies on history, political science, political sociology, Islamic culture and literature, and have written works in their fields; some have become iconic figures of an era as political resistance leaders; others are Sufis, musicians, poets, and architects. Some of these individuals are figures our readers already recognize from their works, both for their intellectual qualities and their Sufi/gnostic identities. Others are names that new generations will encounter for the first time. Featuring portraits of figures of Polish, Bulgarian, British, Pakistani, French, Afghan, Iranian, Filipino/Moro, Kenyan, Sudanese, and Turkish descent, Söyleşiler introduces not only the thoughts and intellectual and political portraits of these individuals but also presents us with the portrait of journalist Âkif Emre. The questions he asks should be read both as a sign of the issues he sought answers to and as an indicator of his intellectual quests, the areas of sensitivity he carried and felt within himself, and the horizon he possessed. At the same time, aside from the fact that we still haven't been able to answer the questions he asked today, how many of these questions still hold a place in our world of mentality and our intellectual agenda remains a separate question worth pondering.
