The play’s protagonist is a Bank Boss, “a man of small measures and petty calculations who dominates life.” He sees everything as legitimate in the pursuit of making money, but he never adopts a hypocritical stance by covering up his immorality to appear honorable. In short, he is a man who is sincere in his immorality. Furthermore, he is aware that the majority of people around him—starting with his own family members, those he employs, and those he interacts with at various levels of society—who appear honorable and honest, are not sincere.
