The cornerstone of Alija Izetbegović’s world of ideas is the Islamic Declaration, which he penned in 1969 and published at his own expense under difficult conditions in Belgrade the following year. Although small in volume, this work has been influential and resonated deeply on both a local and global scale. So much so that it was perceived as an explicit threat by the Tito regime of the former Yugoslavia. It was presented as the most significant piece of evidence in the Young Muslims (Mladi Muslimani) trial held in Sarajevo in 1983. What makes the Islamic Declaration valuable is that, despite being written by a Bosnian living in Sarajevo, it addresses the entire Islamic world. Alija Izetbegović made observations and proposed solutions regarding the problems not only of the Muslims of Yugoslavia but of all Muslim peoples around the world. These observations and solutions remain valid today. Alija Izetbegović’s appeal for annulment against the 14-year prison sentence handed down in 1983—his famous defense—has been translated into Turkish for the first time and is included in the second part of the book.
