The biographies of Hanafi imams have been written in various books throughout history. To my knowledge, the first person to write the life stories of these imams independently according to scientific principles was Muhammad Zahid al-Kawthari. Imam Kawthari examined the lives of Abu Yusuf, Muhammad b. Hasan, Zufar b. Hudhayl, Muhammad b. Shuja' al-Thalji, Hasan b. Ziyad al-Lu'lu'i, Tahawi, and Badr al-Din al-'Ayni separately, and in his works, he touched upon many historical and contemporary issues ranging from the Ahl al-Sunnah creed to principles of jurisprudence.
The book examines the lineage of Imam Abu Yusuf, his youth, his apprenticeship to Imam Abu Hanifa, the teachers from whom he received hadith and knowledge, the students to whom he imparted knowledge, his appointment as a judge and his relations with caliphs, his positions on scholarly consensus (ijma), what has been said about him, the works he authored, and his death.
