It has been 80 years since the publication of the "Living Histories" series, a historiography project brought to life through the efforts of Tahsin Demiray and first published by Türkiye Yayınevi. This series, in which memoirs regarding portraits that have left their mark on the culture, art, thought, and political life of the last century were published in fascicles, has always maintained its status as an important source for our recent history, our culture, and our national issues. The "Living Histories" series, which conveys information and experiences that will inspire and broaden the horizons of both researchers and many readers, has featured dozens of valuable names within 6 volumes. These volumes consist of fascicles and are each a memoir supported by documents. The first work of this series to join the Büyüyenay library includes the memoirs of two musicians and one calligrapher. Published in three fascicles, this work consists of the thoughts and memoirs specifically on music of calligrapher Rifat Yazgan (1857-1942), Turkish music composer and performer Lem'i Atlı (1869-1945), and İsmail Fennî Ertuğrul (1855-1946), whom we know mostly for his identity as a philosopher and thinker, but who also possessed complete mastery of music. According to what is stated in the text, each memoir was read again by its author after being transcribed. However, of these memoirs, the one belonging to Lem'i Atlı was published in 1947, two years after his death; İsmail Fennî Ertuğrul’s in 1946, the year he passed away; and Hattat Rifat Yazgan’s in 1946, four years after his death. These memoirs meet our readers once again after approximately 80 years, enriched with footnotes.
