The book you are holding is a biographical study that delves deep into the multifaceted personality and turbulent life of Shah Ismail. Rather than focusing solely on his political and military achievements, we have endeavored to address Shah Ismail as a whole, taking care to understand him as a leader, a poet, a dervish, and a human being. In this context, the book aims to draw a multidimensional portrait of Shah Ismail by referring to both historical sources and literary works.
Shah Ismail's story is filled with the political and religious turmoil that began in the late 15th century with the collapse of the Timurid Empire. During this period, Iran was divided into small warring principalities, and political instability and sectarian conflicts had permeated every segment of society. It was in such an environment that Ismail, still a child, assumed leadership of the Safavid order and soon gathered a large following of disciples.
However, Shah Ismail's story is not merely a struggle for political power. He also constructed a new political and religious identity by bringing together the Turkmen tribes known as the Qizilbash, who remained loyally devoted to him. The cornerstone of this new identity was Twelver Shiism, which Shah Ismail proclaimed and established as the official sect of Iran.
This decision not only altered the religious structure of Iran but also disrupted the regional balance of power. For at that time, the Sunni Ottoman Empire posed a major threat on Iran's western border. Shah Ismail's emphasis on his Shiite identity ignited the fuse of an inevitable conflict between the two empires.
