Necip Fazıl, who did not write any theatrical works between 1948 and 1960, wrote three plays while in prison following the 1960 coup: Ahşap Konak, Kumandan, and Reis Bey.
The main character of the play, Reis Bey, is a high criminal court judge. He is a strange, lonely man who has spent his life in hotel rooms. A stony-hearted enforcer of the law... In his eyes, mercy is a capital offense, and "to protect one individual in society, one should not hesitate to put execution shrouds on a thousand people."
One day, he sentences a young man brought before him, accused of murdering his mother, to death. From then on, events will unfold very differently, and Reis Bey’s icy inner world will be shattered by a tremendous upheaval.
