Between tanzīh, which means to purify God from any qualities belonging to created beings, and tashbīh, which means to attribute to Him certain qualities that are also found in created beings, theological schools have examined the relationship between God’s essence and attributes and the nature of these attributes from different perspectives. At this point, one of the most important issues on which theological schools have focused is how to interpret the anthropomorphic attributes attributed to God in the scriptures, which are described as khabari (revealed) attributes. This book contains the translation of Iljām al-ʿawām ʿan ʿilm al-kalām, a work by al-Ghazālī (d. 505/1111), one of the most remarkable figures in the history of Islamic thought, which he penned just before his death and in which he examines the function of the science of theology centered on the interpretation of khabari attributes.
