One of the scholars who flourished during a period when the Ottoman Empire was at its peak in terms of science and thought is Dâvûd-i Karsî. Imam Karsî's work, titled Şerh alâ Usûli'l-Hadîs, is a commentary on the work Usûlü'l-Hadîs by the renowned 16th-century Ottoman scholar Imam Birgivî. In this work, he explained the obscure parts of the text, indicated its sources, and incorporated certain principles not mentioned in the original text by citing them from books on usûl al-hadith. In his commentary, Imam Karsî utilized a total of thirty-eight sources, primarily the main references of usûl al-hadith, as well as works on tafsir, fiqh, tasawwuf, kalam, logic, and Arabic grammar.
