Ahmed Midhat Efendi penned this work in response to the growing interest in Buddhism within the French press. This interest, which began with the lectures given by the renowned French ethnologist Leon de Rosny at the Sorbonne, encouraged the author to share his own thoughts on the subject. While informing the Ottoman reader, he also questions the universality of Western concepts. Initially published in the Tercüman-ı Hakikat newspaper, these writings were later compiled into a book in Paris titled "Thirty Thousand Buddhists." This work was written with educated, young readers in mind. Over time, the author observed the influence of Western concepts on Ottoman society and began to focus on this topic, particularly after the 1890s. He emphasizes that the knowledge produced by Europe is generally a product of its own internal reckonings and is not relevant to the rest of the world.
