Adnan Giz (1914-1989) was an intellectual who continued his writing career, which he began in 1935, until the end of his life in newspapers such as Cumhuriyet, Tasvir-i Efkâr, Akşam, Vakit, Son Posta, and Tasvir, and in magazines such as Yedi Gün, Resimli Ay, Yeni Mecmua, Çınaraltı, Tarih Dünyası, Resimli Tarih Mecmuası, 20. Asır, İstanbul Sanayi Odası Dergisi, Belgelerle Türk Tarihi, Hayat Tarih Mecmuası, Hayat Mecmuası, Hayat Tarih ve Edebiyat Mecmuası, Tarih ve Toplum, and Yıllarboyu Tarih. He penned hundreds of articles on industrial history, the history of press advertising, Ottoman history (portraits of sultans, princes, and grand viziers), Turkish history, European history, the Eastern Question, and Istanbul. These articles will be compiled into books within a thematic integrity and added to the Büyüyenay library.
The first book in our Complete Works of Adnan Giz series is an unpublished manuscript that the author arranged into 183 typewritten pages: Advertisements in the Turkish Press (1831–1923). The work is organized into seven chapters: The Era of Mahmud II (1831–1839); The Tanzimat Era (1839-1861); The Era of Abdulaziz (1861–1876); Between Two Eras (1876–1878); The Second Abdulhamid-Censorship Era (1878–1908); The Constitutional Era (1908–1918); The Armistice and the War of Independence (1918–1923). A total of 54 newspapers are covered across these seven chapters. In each chapter, collections of well-known Istanbul newspapers as well as certain provincial newspapers were examined; technical information regarding their formats and layouts was provided; examples indicating their political stances, owners, famous writers, and types of articles were presented; and examples of carefully selected advertisements were provided in a specific categorical order. The work, which acts as an inventory of the political, social, and economic changes in our country during the 19th century through the lens of the press, bears witness to 100 years of change across literature, art, political life, economics, and trends.
While the work was being prepared for publication, images of the mastheads of the newspapers mentioned in the text, as well as a selection of advertisement examples appearing throughout the text, were added to the book. Among the newspapers examined, only the Bursa (1890) and Kastamonu (1890) newspapers could not be accessed.
