The Ertuğrul Cavalry Regiment was established in 1886 by the decree of Sultan Abdulhamid II. Affiliated with the Imperial Guard Army, the regiment was initially composed of young men from various Turkmen tribes in Anatolia. The primary duty of the regiment was to protect Yıldız Palace, where the Sultan resided, and to maintain public order in Istanbul. The Reserve Light Ertuğrul Cavalry Regiment, established in 1897, served as a support force for the Ertuğrul Cavalry Regiment. The regiment rendered great service in the Ottoman Empire's victory against the Greeks. In 1900, the Imperial Escort Cavalry Squadron was established at Yıldız Palace. The Ertuğrul Cavalry Regiment is a unit that symbolizes the birth of the Ottoman Empire, and while returning the Ottomans to their roots, it also makes a reference to the conquering spirit of Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror.
