The effort to compile the newspaper and magazine articles that represent the output of approximately 20 years of Âkif Emre’s life into a body of work is largely completed with "Maps of Unbounded Occupation," a three-book series bringing together his writings on the Islamic World. The first book of this three-volume series, which we have titled "Maps of Unbounded Occupation" and which complement one another, focuses on the Balkans: Bosnia, Albania, Kosovo, Macedonia-Skopje; and Asia, specifically East Turkestan, Crimea, and Arakan. In other words, a spectrum stretching from the West to the Far East.
"Maps of Unbounded Occupation," now a four-book collection including the 2021 publication "Jerusalem Is a Compass," serves as Âkif Emre’s systematic observation, centered on his unchanging sensitivity, of geographies subjected to every kind of colonization by imperial powers. In these writings, where attention is directed toward every region of the Islamic World with principled equality, he turns his focus to a large portion of the world map—to many regions that, despite appearing separate due to their locations, are inherently equal in terms of their circumstances. The common feature of these geographies for us is that almost all of them have been zones of imperial occupation and that each has been engaged in a struggle for existence against this situation for over 100 years. Âkif Emre’s sharp consciousness, which functioned without interruption throughout his life and was in search of global justice, along with his tireless writing, shows us a world where Muslims struggle to breathe. We can say that this was his mission, one with few takers. In truth, this outcome must be considered in light of whether or not a vision of an audience capable of enabling such a mission exists. However, the place Âkif Emre holds on the agenda of the emerging generation is a source of pride for those who appreciate his stance, and a reward for his soul.
He looked at current events through their factual aspects and his own constants. He spoke not from a single point, but from a center. He approached surface events with the dynamics and intellectual principles lying deep beneath. Where did Âkif Emre’s intellectual principles originate? We can answer this question by laying a world map before us and viewing it through the values of our civilization. And he had a distinction: in his work, the concept of resistance against imperial occupation was not alone; it was contained within the concept of construction.
The "otherness" in his writings also emerged from this.
