Since academic institutions in early Republican Turkey could provide employment only with very limited staff, many teachers during this period contributed significantly to academic production in the social sciences, especially in the field of Turkish literary history. Sadettin Nüzhet Ergun (1899-1946) is one of the best examples in this regard. He held the position of sheikh of the Hallaç Baba Sâdî Dervish Lodge, which he had undertaken by proxy since the age of eight, as a full appointee starting from 1921. However, when dervish lodges were closed in 1925, he continued his life by practicing the teaching profession. In addition to his teaching positions in Ankara, Konya, and Istanbul, he also lectured for a time at the Faculty of Letters of Istanbul University. Ergun, who authored scientific research that remains significant today, particularly in the fields of dervish lodge and folk literature, also produced introductory works on some classical Turkish poets. Among his works, in which he provided information on the lives of several Divan poets such as Bâkî, Şeyhülislâm Bahâyî, Neşâtî, and Fehîm and presented selections from their works, are two books he published in 1932 and 1935 on Şeyh Gâlib, one of the important milestones in the long course of Turkish literature. This work is a consolidated version of these publications. In this new edition, the Persian sections in the work have been translated, and some explanations have been added.
