The work in your hands contains the translation of Ibn Rushd’s (d. 595/1198) Fasl al-Maqal, in which he addresses, with great expertise, the legitimacy of philosophy in the face of religion from his identity as a jurist (faqih), the harmony between religious knowledge and philosophical knowledge, and the value of philosophical/scientific knowledge in interpreting religious texts. As the first work to specifically address the religion-philosophy relationship, an additional text has been included to help deepen the understanding of the issues discussed in Fasl al-Maqal: Ibn Rushd’s Damima fi al-Ilm al-Ilahi (An Appendix on Divine Knowledge), in which he examines the issue of whether God knows particulars.
