Elmalılı Muhammed Hamdi Yazır (1878-1942) is an Ottoman scholar who bore witness to the period spanning from the Ottoman Empire to the Republic. He deeply analyzed the significant experiences of the Islamic world during its modernization process and examined the experiences of this era at an intellectual level. Among Elmalılı's wide range of interests is the institution of waqf (endowment), which holds an important place in the Islamic social order. The work titled "Introduction to Ottoman Waqf Law: Ahkâm-ı Evkāf" contains the records of the waqf law lectures that Elmalılı delivered at the Mekteb-i Mülkiye in Istanbul. This work possesses a rich intellectual content, not only with its findings on waqf law but also with its political, philosophical, and psychological analyses.
