This book, known as Mi‘yârû’l-İlim, was written for two purposes: The first purpose is to explain the methods of thinking and reasoning, and to clarify the forms of syllogism and expression. This is because it is an undeniable fact that theoretical sciences, which are not bestowed upon man through creation and intuition, must be learned through thought and effort. Mere effort is not enough to learn these sciences. Indeed, a person pursuing knowledge may be ill-suited for it because they cannot discover the methods of learning. Even if they embark on the path of knowledge, they may not have the strength to reach its end. Or, they may be deceived by a point at which they stall on the path of knowledge and thus fail to reach the summit. What I mean is that a person may have assumptions and prior knowledge about certain subjects. However, this neither shows that they know true and accurate knowledge, nor that they are safe from being deceived by a mirage in the desert. The second purpose is to reiterate the subjects we have explained in the work titled The Incoherence of the Philosophers. In the aforementioned book, we spoke of the terms and expressions they collectively used regarding the science of logic. In this book, we will explain the terms that philosophers have habitually used in a more distinct manner. What encouraged me to write this book is the second, more prominent and specific purpose. The first purpose, however, is more important and general, as I am obligated to explain it to people.
