Chihil Majlis is a text that emerged from the recording of the conversations of Alaüddevle-i Simnânî, a Kubrawi sheikh who lived in Iran during the Ilkhanate period, by his disciple Emir İkbâl Sistânî. In many respects, it is one of Simnânî’s most important works, containing significant information regarding both Simnânî’s own life and the lives of other Kubrawi sheikhs. Beyond Kubrawism, The Forty Sessions—a foundational work for Ilkhanid history regarding the period in which Simnânî lived—also holds a privileged place in terms of reflecting Simnânî’s understanding of Sufism. The spiritual experiences and visions Simnânî encountered during his spiritual journey (sayr-u suluk), his views on following the Sunnah, the Ahl al-Bayt, and the Ahl al-Sunnah, the information he provided regarding dhikr and seclusion (khalwa), interpretations of certain sayings transmitted from Ibn Arabi and other Sufis, Simnânî’s method of spiritual training, his relationships with his disciples, the various spiritual difficulties his disciples faced, and his advice to them are among the main topics of this work. According to Simnânî, who said, “A word that can be trusted must have been spoken in a state of uprightness (istikamet)”: “There are three groups in the world: men, half-men, and non-men. Men are those who speak the truth, do not fear doing so, and do not get angry when they hear the truth. Half-men may speak the truth but get angry when they hear it. Non-men are afraid to speak the truth and get angry when they hear it.
