"The world is an inn, and we are but travelers. The best way to understand this is to set out on a journey. Observing the lifestyles and experiences of others provides an opportunity for comparison. The works they have left behind are like milestones; they give us an idea of where we are going and where we stand. Just like people, cities also have personalities. The accumulation of centuries is etched into the identity of cities.
This work consists of the author's notes from some of his travels in the Islamic world. From North Africa to the Middle East, and from the depths of Russia to the Balkans, it covers a vast geography of civilization. Kairouan is one of the first settlements to emerge from Islamic civilization. From there, the direction turns westward, to Andalusia. Andalusia carries the characteristics of a transitional period between Islamic and Western civilizations. From there, we return to the Middle East region. Ancient Jerusalem, as a point of meeting and divergence, lies at the heart of the People of the Book. In the Turkic world, Kazan holds a significant position as the first region to embrace Islam. The story of the lost Bulgar Khanate and its children carries instructive qualities.
The author then moves on to Eastern Europe and the Balkans. The cities, which are remnants of the Ottoman Empire, bear the traces of a world we have forgotten today. Bulgaria, Greece, Skopje, and Bosnia and Herzegovina offer us a common atmosphere stemming from centuries of living together. These countries, which still host significant Turkish or Muslim populations today, are a natural and cultural extension of our geography. This work is not a travel guide, but it contains many details that cannot be found in touristic travelogues. It is not a history of countries or cities, but it includes enough reflections on the past to provide insight within the limits of a journey. In terms of subject matter, it may enter the realms of history, geography, art, and literature. Ultimately, each one is a separate travel story.
