The reasons for the rise and fall of a nation are always complex and multifaceted. Only some of these reasons are quantifiable and thus open to analysis and exploration. Other causes, hidden within the hearts and wills of people, remain inaccessible and inexplicable. Alija Izetbegović, a great statesman who dedicated his life to engraving Islam into hearts as a way of life, draws attention to the errors in our Islamic awakening in his work, Notes from the Prison. He reveals through historical facts that Islam is not merely a theological approach, and that it cannot be sanctified and subsequently idolized simply by delivering religious messages. He demonstrates how Muslim societies became easy prey for barbarians when the role of Islam in regulating and changing the outer world was forgotten and the faith was instead approached from a traditional and folkloric perspective.
