It is said that Muawiya had a palace built in Damascus, just to the south of the walled area that would later become the Umayyad Mosque. This “palace,” constructed solely of brick and wood, did not much impress the Byzantine envoy who visited it in the 670s. R. Stephen Humphreys’ study examines the establishment of the Umayyad State by focusing on Muawiya, a controversial figure throughout Islamic history. With the establishment of the Umayyad State, the first dynastic state in Islamic history, Humphreys attempts to construct a plausible historical reality between the disparate narratives woven around Muawiya’s name and his central role in the spread of Islam—through increased conquests—from Turkestan to the heart of France, and from Anatolia to India.
