Among those who were born and raised in the late Ottoman period and spent a significant portion of their lives in the Republican era, thus serving as a bridge between the two periods, Tâhirü’l-Mevlevî, later known as Tahir Olgun, holds an important place. Endowed with attributes such as Sufi, Masnavi reciter, litterateur, historian, writer, and educator, Tâhirü’l-Mevlevî was one of the well-educated figures of his time. With the commentary work he undertook in the final period of his life, he also earned the title of Masnavi commentator, a significant position in the tradition. He was an intellectual who endeavored to express, sustain, and transmit the values of the civilization to which he belonged during difficult times, not only through education but also through publishing activities, and in this vein, he produced many exemplary works.

Müslümanlıkta İbadet Tarihi (History of Worship in Islam) is a work in which the primary principles of worship, such as prayer, fasting, zakat, and pilgrimage, are evaluated from a historical perspective. In this sense, it is the first and currently the only work of its kind in Turkish. In one respect, the work also possesses a "comparative" feature. While shedding light on the periods when acts of worship were ordained by divine command, a comparison is also made with the worship and customs of the preceding Age of Ignorance. In the introduction, the author describes the sections of the work and his writing method as follows:

“In the section dedicated to each of the four pillars in history, a considerable amount of information was provided regarding prayer, fasting, and pilgrimage; furthermore, at the beginning, the beliefs of the Age of Ignorance and how Islam modified and rectified them were discussed to some extent. To demonstrate that what I have conveyed is not fabricated, the names of the reputable books from which I obtained them are indicated either at the beginning or at the end of the sections.”

First published in its complete form in 1946, Müslümanlıkta İbadet Tarihi was created by utilizing dozens of sources. These sources were evaluated within the text and in lengthy footnotes, approached with a quite comprehensive and scholarly attitude. Likewise, the meanings, explanations, and historical backgrounds of worship, belief, and the cultural concepts formed around them have been included in the book in line with the information obtained from the sources.
