teftazani-prof-dr-mahmut-cinar
Taftazani / Prof. Dr. Mahmut Çınar

Taftazani, as a figure who delved deeply into both the transmission-based and rational sciences, earned the title of "allame" (polymath) and has been remembered by this title in the periods following him. It is observed that his areas of interest were primarily the linguistic (rhetoric) and methodological sciences (theology, principles of jurisprudence), and that he demonstrated his true success in these fields. He was also most influential on subsequent generations in these same areas. Taftazani’s biography corresponds to a period when the Ottoman Empire was still in its formative stage. Because he lived in the northeast of the Islamic world, he spent his life in a geography that was largely the scene of political mobility. Towards the end of his life, he came to Samarkand, the capital of the Timurids, lived there in the court of Timur, and remained in Samarkand until his death. During the period he lived, Transoxiana, Iran, and Anatolia were the scenes of fierce competition and wars between Muslim statelets and principalities. Perhaps the reason that led Taftazani to adopt a more cautious and pluralistic approach in his scholarly and intellectual assessments was the political turmoil in the Islamic world and the efforts of factions involved in this turmoil to find religious justifications for their positions. His cautious stance and pluralistic understanding were reflected in all the fields in which he produced works. With this stance, he was extremely influential on the Ottoman madrasas, and his works were insistently taught. In fact, together with Sayyid Sharif al-Jurjani, he formed the ideal scholar profile for the Ottoman ulema, and to point out the scholarly depth of someone, it was said, "like the two Sa'ds." His scholarly method and the works he penned were accepted by the Ottoman ulema, and many marginal notes (hashiya) were written on his works. Today, his works are still read and his views and assessments are held in high regard in circles that maintain classical educational models, such as eastern madrasas.
