Cevahirü’l-Me’ânî, written by Hızır bin Yakup in 1406, is a five-chapter work composed in Old Oghuz Turkish. The author expresses the reason for writing his work with the following sentence: "And I have named this book Cevahirü’l-Me‘ani (Jewels of Meanings). Its primary purpose is this: Whenever a sincere disciple, seeker, and lover evaluates it with true and unhurried effort and acts in accordance with the requirements of these chapters, may he know himself comprehensively: who he is, where he has come from, and where he will return?"
The most voluminous section of the work is the part where the Asmâ-i Hüsnâ (the most beautiful names of Allah) is expounded. Regarding this section, the author states, "many virtuous people have been unable to endure and have remained helpless in expounding the reward of these dear and glorious names," and thus, he has provided a comprehensive commentary on the Asmâ-i Hüsnâ in his work. We have given this work, whose literal Turkish translation is "Jewels of Meanings," the subtitle Commentary on the Dear and Glorious Names, based on the author's own expressions.
Containing topics related to Asmâ-i Hüsnâ, faith, worship, repentance, death, and the afterlife, the work serves both as a spiritual guide and as a unique resource for our world of language, literature, and belief. The final section of the work is a "siyasetname" (book of statecraft), expressing the "manners of emirs and viziers and advice for them."
