Chingiz Aitmatov masterfully depicts the great struggle that humans wage against the world, themselves, and others from different perspectives through three powerful stories. In "The Day-Longer Than a Century" (The Manaschi with the Thunderous Voice), one of his most famous stories, Aitmatov presents his reader with a striking cross-section of Kyrgyz history. While he tells the story of an orphan who lost his father in the war in "The Soldier's Son," "White Rain" focuses on the conflict between a young woman taking her first steps into adult life and wanting to stand on her own two feet, and her mother.
