"Among the Ottoman sultans, there have been those who authored a Divan; among Ottoman poets, there have been those who possessed a Persian Divan. However, the only Ottoman Sultan to have a Persian Divan is Yavuz Sultan Selim. As the ninth Sultan of the Ottoman throne, Yavuz was a world-conquering figure who shaped history; while expanding his country into a world empire spanning three continents, he also addressed the world with his poems as Selimî, a man of influence in the field of culture through his mastery of three Eastern languages. Experts have evaluated his poetry alongside that of the most famous Iranian poets, and Iranian poets have also expressed their admiration for his work.
Poems reported to be in Yavuz Sultan Selim’s own handwriting are being researched and presented to the scholarly world for the first time. In addition to its originality in terms of attribution to the author, this manuscript contains the highest number of poems ever accessed. While only 305 of Yavuz Sultan Selim’s poems were known until now, the number of poems in this newly reached manuscript is 537. With this manuscript, a total of 232 qasidas and ghazals written under the pseudonym Selimî have come to light for the first time. We believe that from now on, the horizon of Yavuz’s literary world will be viewed through a wider window and that this study will lead to new approaches toward the poems of Selimî."
