Starting from the fact that all doctrines in the world possess a type of perfect or complete human being, an ideal model of humanity, and conscious of the fact that our human value system is determined by this ideal human type in our minds, Ali Shariati states that Muslim social scientists should also lean on such a model. According to him, this ideal human and society is "an attraction that determines the direction of movement." It is a constant state of becoming, movement, and migration; it is choosing to head in a direction. It is a journey toward the Muhammadan model and an effort to build a society in the direction of the social relations he exemplified. Islamic cities, as fields for the transmission of Islamic existential knowledge, were also structured within the framework of certain main principles. Among these, wholeness, simplicity, transience, privacy, and justice, for which the principle of tawhid draws the general framework, can be mentioned as the most central values. Islamic architecture, which Turgut Cansever speaks of as a discipline of Sacred Art, has flourished throughout Islamic history in cities such as Mecca, Medina, Jerusalem, Baghdad, Cairo, Damascus, Cordoba, and Istanbul. Cansever mentions that Islamic architecture can only emerge with an Islamic attitude that must be purified from personal ambition, pride, and polytheism (shirk), or from overt or covert fetishistic alienations. Today’s understanding of city and housing, on the other hand, appears as a concept where ostentation and splendor have replaced simplicity and where a desire to create a paradise on earth is being attempted to be materialized. In this book, the effects of late capitalism experienced on a global scale on Islamic cities are discussed within the framework of different main themes. However, our aim in doing this is not to reproduce a nostalgic and therefore pessimistic reading of the future. On the contrary, it is to read this process of articulation correctly and, while deciphering the problems it contains, to emphasize the possibility of bringing another world, another understanding of human-society, into life.
