Imam Abu Hanifa (rahimahullah) gave the name al-Fiqhu’l-Akbar to the science of creed. Similarly, his treatise on creed transmitted by Hammad is also called “al-Fiqhu’l-Akbar.” The transmission by Abu Muti‘, however, is called “al-Fiqhu’l-Absat.”
Abu al-Muntaha’s commentary on al-Fiqhu’l-Akbar is neither so long as to tire the reader, nor so short as to be insufficient for understanding the intent of the text. For this reason, it has become one of the most popular commentaries. It even took its place among the most widely read books during the Ottoman period.
The author notes in the introduction: “al-Fiqhu’l-Akbar, the book of Imam al-A‘zam, is an authentic and accepted book. I wanted to gather some expressions from the Qur’an, the Sunnah, and reputable books to serve as a commentary on this precious and subtle work.”
The work, completed in 1523 (930 AH), was printed in Istanbul (1307), Hyderabad (1321), and Kazan (1313).
