Ghazali’s al-Mustasfa is one of the fundamental works in determining the sources of Islamic law and establishing a methodological framework for the process of legal derivation. By employing the deductive method in his work, Ghazali represents a significant turning point in the tradition, particularly by including the subject of Logic—which he viewed as a prerequisite for all sciences—in his book. One of the aspects that distinguishes al-Mustasfa from other works on the principles of jurisprudence (usul al-fiqh) is the purpose for which it was written. Viewing himself as an absolute mujtahid, Ghazali did not pen al-Mustasfa to defend or promote a particular school of thought, nor as a mere textbook. The primary purpose of authoring this work was to present his own methodology and to provide guidance for those seeking to ascend the ranks of ijtihad.
