Mevâkıf consists of the aphoristic expressions of Niffari, a gnostic who remained far from any claims of fame or fortune. With his somewhat intricate style and stance, Niffari offers clues regarding the ecstasy of travelers walking the thorny paths of spiritual wayfaring (sulûk). Yet, he does not do this with a didactic tone, but rather through whispers whose secrets can only be reached through commentaries. This work by Niffari, titled Mevâkıf and consisting of various stations (mawqif), makes it possible to view many Sufi technical terms—such as the 'waqfa,' a means of heart-centered transformation in the transition from annihilation (fana) to subsistence (baqa), or the 'matla',' which provides the possibility of introspection, and the 'ghayba,' which must be passed through for true presence—from different perspectives. Though they challenge the walls of the mind as if to remind one of the vastness of the desert, the 'mawqifs,' which always emphasize the goal of spiritual wayfaring, also possess a function that cools the hearts of travelers like a waterskin in the scorching heat of worldly exile. It is our hope that these stations, which can be more clearly positioned in our inner worlds through the commentaries of his expositor Tilimsani, will provide at least some provision for those seeking ways out of the chaos of the age.
