kurtulus-savasinin-sansursuz-tarihi-dr-seyfi-say
The Uncensored History of the War of Independence / Dr. Seyfi Say

It is well known that there is an ongoing battle in our country between official history and unofficial history when it comes to the War of Independence (İstiklâl Harbi, National Struggle). From this perspective, we must admit that the book you are holding should be categorized as official history. This is because the primary source of this work is the book *Çankaya* by Falih Rıfkı Atay, Atatürk’s “right-hand man.” In other words, although references are occasionally made to other sources, the backbone of this work consists of Falih Rıfkı’s accounts.

However, let us state from the outset that the perennial spokespeople of official history will not particularly ‘enjoy’ this book. The reason for this is that it was written using a critical and analytical method rather than simply repeating rote narratives. In this book, readers will not find the made-up or polished-varnished version of the War of Independence and Atatürk that they are accustomed to seeing, but rather a genuine portrait.

Although our book’s title contains the word ‘uncensored,’ we must state that this is a relative and limited form of being uncensored. This is because the Law on Protecting Atatürk blocks the path to being truly uncensored from the very start. It is not surprising that the law in question was enacted during the Democrat Party era, as Atatürk was already “effectively protected” from all forms of opposition, objections, and differing opinions during the Single-Party era. The confiscation and burning of the book written by Kâzım Karabekir about the War of Independence is a striking example of this. It is easy to guess what those who deemed such treatment appropriate for a commander like Karabekir might do to others.

If we know even a little about the realities of the War of Independence today, we owe it to people like Karabekir. Nevertheless, thank goodness that Atatürk’s supporters like Falih Rıfkı and Mazhar Müfit have also provided important information, in a way that would delight the soul of Koca Ragıp Paşa, the author of the verse, “When boasting of his bravery, the Gypsy thief confesses his own theft.” Without their revelations, the ‘official’ history book you hold in your hands could not have been written.
