Hacı Mehmed Zihni Efendi, a distinguished figure among the late Ottoman ulema, has created a veritable treasure trove of knowledge and culture with this work, opting for a highly harmonious and elegant style—interspersed with literary wit, poetry, and proverbs—rather than penning yet another tedious and monotonous biography.
In this work titled "Famous Women" (Meşâhîru’n-Nisâ), Mehmed Zihni Efendi introduces notable women from different periods of history, including the biographies of proficient women from virtually every segment of society. This work serves as an essential source for understanding the daily lives of these women, as well as for grasping the social life of the era as a whole and gaining insight into the history of culture and education.
Organized alphabetically, this book distinguishes itself from similar works written previously by presenting astonishing information about not only women who stood out in Islamic history but also those who made their mark on human history as a whole.
