In Islamic thought, the science of waḍʿ (the science of positing or imposition) emerged within disciplines such as legal theory (uṣūl al-fiqh), logic, and rhetoric (bayān), eventually evolving into an independent structure. From the perspective of Arabic linguistics, this discipline has formed an important part of semantic theory within the linguistic tradition by outlining a framework concerning issues such as the problem of signification (dalālah) and the relationship between word and meaning. Furthermore, the science of waḍʿ includes, in certain respects, dimensions related to the Islamic paradigm, such as the debates on good and evil (ḥusn and qubḥ), the issue of whether a human is the creator of their own actions, and the general "problem of agency." It should be added that waḍʿ is, by its very nature, organically connected to subjects such as God’s justice, human freedom, and the linguistic truth and inimitability (iʿjāz) of the Holy Qur'an. Therefore, the science of waḍʿ is an important field that bridges the linguistic domain with Islamic sciences within an ontological and epistemological framework. This book is the Turkish translation of Yūsuf al-Dijwī’s (1870–1946) work titled Khulāṣat ʿilm al-waḍʿ, enriched with footnotes. In his work, the author summarizes the views expressed before him regarding the science of waḍʿ and opens them for discussion with a critical approach. This study, prepared by al-Dijwī with a pedagogical method, addresses—in his own words—individuals of every level.
