This book consists of 100 wise sayings of Ali ibn Abi Talib, compiled by the renowned scholar of Arabic language and literature al-Jahiz (d. 869), along with their Persian translation in the form of couplets by Rashid al-Din Watwat (d. 1177), a famous Persian poet and writer of the Seljuk (1038-1194) and Khwarazmian (1097-1231) periods, as well as the Turkish verse translations of these renderings by Mustafa Izzet Efendi and Hacezade Ahmed Cevdet. In the preparation of this book, the works titled Sad Kelime-i Hazret-i Ali (translated into Persian verse by Jami, translated into Turkish verse by Mustafa Izzet Efendi, Istanbul 1869) and Tercüme-i Sad Kelime-i Hazret-i Ali (translated and versified in Persian by Abdullah al-Harawi (d. 1089), translated and versified in Turkish by Hacezade A. Cevdet, Istanbul 1893) served as the basis. "Apologize for a mistake only once. For apologizing twice diminishes your worth. Repeating an apology is merely refreshing that mistake." "If you are to give advice, do so in private. For there is no better way to offer counsel than this. Advice given in public is nothing more than an act of breaking one's dignity." "O you who possess virtue but no wealth! Do not complain about your Creator. Do not seek bounty while in ignorance. For the bounty of the ignorant is like greenery on a dunghill." "If you lose hope in people, your body will be free and your heart joyful. And if you pin your hopes on them, you will lose your dignity and your freedom." "Do not go to extremes in affirming everyone. For this leads to hypocrisy. Refrain from being constantly oppositional. For this increases hostility." "Look for what a person hides in their heart sometimes in the words they speak and sometimes in the expressions on their face."
