"Ebüssuûd Efendi is one of the important pioneering figures who matured during the most magnificent era of the Ottoman Empire. Possessing a critical perspective and whose competence was indisputably accepted, Ebüssuûd Efendi was highly praised by his contemporaries, with odes written in his name. With his many distinguished qualities, primarily his sharp intellect, he stood out among his peers in a short time and rose to the position of Shaykh al-Islam, the pinnacle of the scholarly hierarchy in which he served at every level. Despite the heavy burden of this position, which he held for many years, he authored numerous works, most notably his famous exegesis, 'İrşâdü’l-aklis-selîm'. With this exegesis, which rightfully earned him the title of 'Sultanu’l-müfessirîn' (Sultan of Exegetes), Ebüssuûd Efendi, according to some, surpassed al-Zamakhshari and al-Baydawi in the application of the science of rhetoric to the exegesis of the Quran. He provided many services that were reformative in nature to the Ottoman state organization. The most important of these services are in the field of law. For instance, he ensured equality before the law and unity in the application of law, took social conditions and needs into account while generating solutions to problems, and was the architect of the miri (state-owned) land system. With the many fatwas he issued while serving as Shaykh al-Islam, he brought solutions to religious issues as well as social and political problems. He never cut his ties with the pursuit and teaching of knowledge, and he trained many students who went on to occupy important positions after him, seven of whom also became Shaykh al-Islam. In short, Shaykh al-Islam Ebüssuûd Efendi is a magnificent personality worthy of the Ottoman Empire's glorious era, known for his elegance, dignity, high scholarly persona, upright stance against political authority, and his refusal to compromise his truths and principles."
