‘Love’ takes the believer from one realm to another. That is why, in the language of love, the beloved is called "yar" (the companion). Then, like everything else, love fell from the companion to the stranger. The heart ceased to be a sanctuary entered with reverence and turned into an ownerless inn, entered through one door and exited through another. Love, once the name for liberation from carnal desire, became the headquarters of lust and fame. When love fell from its pedestal, the word also lost its context and became a tool for garnering interest in the mouths of sycophants. So that the world might come to its senses and humanity might awaken, scholars and sages uttered many words whose spirits were drawn from the Holy Quran. Many prices were paid to this end; yet, even though the word was spent in its proper place, it could not reach its destination. For this era of interregnum was much deeper than those that came before. It left man with neither language, nor wisdom, nor conscience. Even the salt, which prevents the corruption of things, has lost its savor. We looked at the world, we were deceived, and we thought we would remain there forever. Allah, the Almighty, who causes the rose to grow from the thorn, is capable of turning this winter into spring. When we understand that rank, position, money, and property are all ephemeral—lasting only a few seasons—we will fall in love with the Ever-Living and the Immortal, the One who will outlast all deaths.
