Ali Behçet Efendi is a figure who, in the history of 18th and 19th-century Sufism, embodied three distinct Sufi traditions: Naqshbandiyya, Mevleviyya, and Melamiyya. The Ubeydiye Treatise serves as a handbook for those versed in Sufism. Indeed, its first section, which outlines the principles and fundamental rules to be followed by seekers of truth, acts as a guide for men of spiritual meaning. Basic concepts of Sufism—such as the ego (nafs), the heart, the soul, the inner self, types of servitude, oneness (tawhid-wahdat), liberation from the self versus falling captive to it, and spiritual journeying—along with all the processes experienced by spiritual wayfarers, are addressed in a style that is simple and accessible for those traveling this path. The commentary on the Kelimât-ı Kudsiyye (Sacred Words) of the renowned Sufi Khwaja Abdul Khaliq Ghujdawani included in the book is quite concise and easy to understand. Following the commentary, the author addresses the concepts of hunger, prayer, seeking forgiveness, the struggle against the ego, and sincerity. The main text concludes with a brief section on tawhid and its varieties. The book also includes two na't-ı şerîfs (poems praising the Prophet) by Ali Behçet Efendi. Another notable feature of the work is that it is a rare example of an Ottoman-era printed book set in ta'liq script.
