Great men emerge in difficult times, or difficult times bring great men to the stage. In times of hardship, sincerity comes to the fore, whereas in years of material prosperity, calculation prevails. This is why hypocrites appear not in the Meccan period, but in Medina.
The signs on top of minarets, the poles on borders, and mountain peaks are called "alem" (beacons). In terms of both word and meaning, scholars are also beacons, as they remind people of their Islamic responsibilities and show them the path to Paradise.
In every era, hundreds of thousands of people have served in the cadre of officials on the path of serving Islam. However, the number of scholars who shield the faith against the destructive moves of disbelief is very small compared to the total. It is those few who have been the means for the direction and guidance of millions. Those who grew up around them—not by dividing the community, but on the contrary—called the divided community to stand shoulder to shoulder in mosques by saying: “You have the right to say, ‘My path is the truth, or it is more beautiful.’ However, you do not have the right to say, ‘Only my path is the truth.’”
