With the Iranian revolution, Shi'ism gained an influence far exceeding its demographic proportion. Instead of pursuing a policy toward political unity and strategic non-conflict by collaborating with the Islamic world against imperialism, Iran opted for a sectarian-based foreign policy in which it instrumentalized and transformed Shi'ism, turning it into an object of its theo-politics. Iran’s expansionist policy—which never ceased its steady march to increase its power by collaborating with the US and Russia against the Sunni majority in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Syria—was internalized until major traumas occurred in the region.
Experiencing power intoxication through its ambiguous and unsettling steps in the region until the Syrian Revolution, Iran was unaware of the popular uprisings growing beneath the surface and the revolutions preparing to emerge one after another. Blinded by its grand plans, even to the detriment of the Muslim world, Iran is now staging the final act of these intrigues and limited options. The reality that the gains Iran achieved with the support of Western powers are collapsing is haunting the region like a specter. There was a need for a study that examined this issue in all its aspects. The void pointed out by this book is directed precisely at this need.
