Everything began around noon on September 27, 1937. Kadri Bey was sitting at a table at the Haylayf Patisserie in Pangaltı, quietly writing something, when suddenly someone lunged at him. He grabbed the paper in front of him, tore it to shreds, and caused a scene by shouting and yelling. But who was this man, and why had he done such a thing? The book you are about to read tells the strange stories of Faruk Küçük, beginning with this curious incident in which he was the protagonist.
About a month after this incident, Faruk Küçük would state that he actually had no ailment and had only caused a scene to feign mental illness. Out of a mixture of curiosity, adventure, and a bit of amateur experimentation, he had attempted to enter the Forensic Medicine Institute and then an asylum by faking insanity. The question of interest is this: Can a person convince psychiatrists that they are mentally ill by faking it? Attempting to do so is an adventure in itself. According to his claim, Faruk Küçük had succeeded in this endeavor. He had checked into and out of an asylum, and he wrote down this month-long adventure and sold it to the Son Posta newspaper for publication. The series was published in the newspaper between October 22, 1937, and January 31, 1938, under the title "I Am an Asylum Escapee."
This series immediately draws attention with its intrigue. However, there are many question marks surrounding it. For one, no information about Faruk Küçük can be found outside of this series. Therefore, it is even debatable whether he was a real person or a completely fictional character. Yes, there is someone who is said to be the real Faruk Küçük. There are even many photographs of him within the series. At the very least, the newspaper's claim is that what is being told is true.
All the information we can access about Faruk Küçük consists solely of his own statements made between the lines at various points in the text. Although there are question marks regarding the reality of this book, the narratives are highly original in any case. It has literary value in terms of both style and content. As Faruk Küçük recounts his story stretching from the police station to the forensic institute and Bakırköy Hospital, he takes readers on a delightful journey through interesting characters, places, and memories of 1930s Istanbul. Furthermore, the dialogues, in which sanity and madness, the normal and the abnormal are occasionally questioned, also lend a philosophical flavor to the text.
