Upon the recommendation of Elmalılı Hamdi Yazır, he went to Egypt in 1912 and received advanced Islamic education at Al-Azhar University for two years. A Night at the Karnak Temple is a product of Tahir Harimi’s student days in Egypt. Our author joined the Cairo Spiritualist Society in 1912 through some friends and visited the Karnak Temple with one of the members of that society. Based on this visit, he wrote A Night at the Karnak Temple by describing the history and structure of Karnak, the belief characteristics of the period, and the rituals in this temple, with a style that makes it seem as if he had witnessed these rituals himself.

In the work, the great scholars and philosophers of the past who gather at the Karnak Temple discuss the historical course and evolution of science and put forward their ideas. In this respect, A Night at the Karnak Temple is a kind of history of science, serving as an example of a theological and philosophical approach to knowledge. Another important feature of the book is that it bears clear traces of the ideas of Allan Kardec, the founder of modern spiritualism, and is one of the texts in Turkish literature that carries the influences of spiritualism.

The work was first published in 1938 under the title “Karnak Mabedi’nde Bir Gece” (A Night at the Karnak Temple) in Balıkesir. There are four copies of the work: one printed and three manuscripts. The first three copies were written by Tahir Harimi in his own handwriting in Ottoman Turkish. These copies are in the form of drafts that formed the original work over time. Two of the copies are dated 1933 and 1937, while one copy is undated.

While preparing the work for publication, the three manuscript copies and the one printed copy were compared, the differences in expression between them were reflected in the text to create a single text, and the language of the text was not interfered with.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0673/5088/8690/files/612-kanakmabedindebirgece-1718460671.jpg?v=1725649176
