Yekten Yürekten is Amina Šiljak-Jesenković’s second book in Turkish. As our readers may recall, the first was Emin Daire'nin Sivri Köşeleri. Amina Šiljak continues her scholarly research at the Oriental Institute of the University of Sarajevo, while simultaneously penning essays outside the academic world—essays that are likely nourished by it. Genuine essays. Essays that derive their truth from their sincerity and heartfelt nature. She critiques, employs irony, satirizes, occasionally tells stories, gets angry, creates unexpected turns, forces us to confront ourselves, and holds up various mirrors to us. Much like life itself. You think she is describing Bosnia, but she is actually describing Turkey. You think she is describing both, yet she opens doors to humanity, gathering fresh contemporary forces from the great tradition to create texts that are remarkably vibrant and serene. Let us hear it from her: "Everyone can only write what they touch with their own fingers, their own theory. That is all. The Bosnia I write of, my Turkey, my pains and joys, my agenda, my traditions, my critiques, my nostalgias, are the manifestations of the real in my mind and heart. Signifiers of what is shown. My Gerçek Hayat writings are my reality. A kind of cupping of emotions and mind. Rarely a blood donation. So that I do not burst from pain, joy, or contemplation." Her writings are, as the title of her book suggests, Yekten Yürekten (Sincere and Heartfelt). Uncalculated, selfless. Because she says: "There can be no subtle calculation in emotion, mind, or agenda. Where there is subtle calculation, there can be no love. There can be no gallantry." For this reason, each of the writings that bring Yekten Yürekten to wholeness does not merely provide information on its subject; it seeks the golden ratio between the contemporary and the ancient, attempting to capture—like litmus paper—glimmers of the life experience of masters such as Yunus, Niyazi-i Mısrȋ, and Şeyh Galip. With the trust it feels in their unity, it becomes Yekten Yürekten.
